I always sow straight into the ground but have left it till late March early April, I have always used new seed, my soil is light/sandy, chicken pellets I apply lightly about a month / 6 weeks before. Usually about a 70 - 80 % success rate.

Cling film over the top and a red napkin on top of the kitchen paper.
Cling film stops the paper dying out and the red napkin makes it ten times easier to see the tiny white roots.

I have mine on damp kitchen towel in placcy bag in the window sill. It has been there for about a week and a half with no signs of germination. I was just about to give up, as Im rubbish at parsnips, so thanks for the advise I will wait a bit longer and see if I can get them going. I love parsnips but can never seem to get a decent crop, hoping this year will be sucessfull. Last year my parsnips (with the exception of one) looked like baby carrots:0

I'm giving the airing-cupboard-and-loo-roll method a try - this is my first year growing parsnips, so I'll be interested to see how it works out...

Or a camping gas stove and camp kettle - adds that element of adventure and excitement too It's what I did for my parsley last year (my dear old Grandad used that tip, and it always works a treat for me).

Well, this is my first go at growing parsnips, so I watch this thread with interest. Only put them on the kitchen roll the day before yesterday, so I know I've got a long wait ahead...

*runs off to find a plastic bag* thanks for that!

no signs of roots just yet... but they look a bit puffier so im hoping thats signalling internal goings on- probably reading too much into it, but hey ho!

I always grow Galdiator Parsnip and it comes up without fail on each occasion that I have tried, no special treatment.

I've merged these 2 threads as they were saying pretty much the same thing.

Mine are on the windowsill near enough two weeks now. I put them on a cloth inside a paper bag when I went away for a few days, now they're all dried out. I think will just sow them as they are in a couple of days.
