Hi all, thanks for replying.
I was told it had a celery flavour and that was why I was going to try it, but if its bitter I may think again.
Hi, it's a common veg in Asia. It doesn't taste quite like celery and may taste bitter if eaten raw. However if you blanch it in boiling salted water for a couple of minutes and then refresh in icy-cold water, it gets rid of the bitterness and personally I prefer it to celery.
The leaves are ok so long as the rib is removed (it's the white sap that's so bitter), but it's ready to eat when lots of other good stuff is also ready.
We found the outer of the stem to be full of milky sap and very bitter and although we tried it peeled didn't think to blanch it. The inner part of the stem is quite palatable but with lots of other crops ready to eat that didn't need as much preparation we tended not to harvest it. Give it a go and see what you make of it.
