(probably) a daft question on companion planting

Just a thought but given with that slugs love marigolds will all the local slugs eat the marigolds instead of my veg? OR will the marigolds attract shedloads of slugs that wouldnt have pitched up in the first place?
I have visions of slug immigrants taking up position in the garden just because I have marigolds
