Pea: Feltham First advice

Firstly is it possible to grow these in a window box? Im a bit short on space and was going to put them to grow up the fence. I also have some purple podded peas from secret santa that I was planning to do the same with.
Or is it possible to grow them up the bean teepee with the beans?

The back of the feltham packet says to sow now so was thinking of starting them in the window box in the unheated greenhouse. Any advice?

Yes, give it a go. Growing the purple podded peas up a teepee might not work since the beans grow lots of big leaves and will probably crowd and shade the peas out.

Feltham First only grow 18" so it would be a little teepee

I planted some in November in paper pots in plastic greenhouse. Just waiting for the snow/frost to go so I can plant them out in tubs on patio.

My Felthams went straight in the ground October, they're growing well and survived the first bout of snow but I am a tad worried about them at the moment

Do peas dislike root disturbance? I note that some people plant in guttering and then slide them into toh ground. Could I start my purple ones of in modules later then transplant. I thought this might stop the mice having them for dinner!

Thanks for all the tips for the feltham guys, will plant as soon as it defrosts enough, and I wont build a mini tee pee My lot think I am mad enough as it is!

I had fairly good results last year from starting in modules, just be warned that you need to plant them out while smallish or they all get tangled up!!

Feltham are an early pea - and French beans can't be planted out till after your last frost (which depends where you are but Mid May is a generalisation) so there wouldn't be much point in putting them together, I would think?

Feltham are suitable for both early and late plantings, along side kelveldon wonder and onward for in between these sowings.

They have good cold tolerance, so hopefully your outside sowings should be ok, just been a bit extreme this year.

If you want to grow in containers, i'd go for a large pot rather than a window box,

I did Onward peas in a windowbox (plastic one about seven inches deep and a foot and a half long) and they didn't really seem to like it. I think they needed something deeper, so will try a plastic storage bin this year.

Have you considered a large hanging basket? There is a thread somewhere around here about it. The slugs can't get them, and they are able to use the chains to climb up.. so no extra supports

What variety are your purple podded ones Fi? I have some that are called Carruthers Purple Podded and they're massive! If yours are the same or similar old-fashioned ones, then I don't think they'd be happy in a window box size container They'd need a pretty big tub I should think and plenty of watering, or in the ground if you have room, and good support.
Modern varieties of peas grow quite happily in containers though, I always have a few flower buckets full to start the season, along with a couple of buckets of early carrots

I'm trying Caruthers this year too, Sarz. My Lancashire Lad purple podded are also big - they reached the tops of my 7ft canes last year.

I dont know what the purple ones are, they came from secret Santa! But they are going in a raised bed next to a fence to climb up.
My only concern is that a 5ft ish the fence wont be high enough!
