Pea: Feltham First advice

I'm trying Caruthers this year too, Sarz. My Lancashire Lad purple podded are also big - they reached the tops of my 7ft canes last year.

I had to stop mine, I had 7ft canes but there was about a ft in the ground, and they easily reached the top. Once the tops were pinched, they bushed out from the bottom! Rampant!! Very pretty, lovely purple & pink flowers, but the peas get a bit floury if left to fill the pod.

I think that's so with many heritage peas. After all, they were mainly grown as a keeping crop - for dried peas to last you over the thin months of winter and early spring. I find the purple ones lovely as a mangetout though. Really unusual and tasty. Get 'em young!
