  • Growing onions and an early start

What is the best way to start early with onions?
I now have a cold Greenhouse [built in september]and was given a propagator for Xmas, so the possibilities are endless.
I have a max/min thermometer in the green house. At this time of the year the max temp is 10 degrees and minimum temp is about 3 degrees on cold nights.
I know that too high a heat can cause later bolting so as it is my first year I thought I should ask other people who have more experience.

    Jax,

Yesterday I transplanted my large onions from the propergator to individual pots. I also have some pot and mammoth leeks just showing in pots on a windowsill.

It is only the giant or exhibition onions that are started now as they need a long growing season.

Jaxom we have a parafin heater in our greenhouse which is on before any seeds are planted and while the seeds are sprouting and the seedlings are growing. Starting the seeds off in a propagator is good but alot will germinate on the greenhouse shelves with the heater on. We sow alot of seeds so the propagator is used for seeds that will only germinate at high temperatures. When your seedlings come out of the propagator they will need a warm greenhouse to continue growing so my advice is to buy a parafin heater.

I have installed an electric convector heater in the greenhouse to stop it going bellow 3 degrees.
        Many thanks for the advice.
