Manky garlic-White onion rot?

One of my garlic plants has gone yellow, the bulb is mush. These are the co-op eating garlic i sowed "just to see". Two of the others in the same trough are looking a tad ropey too.
Could this be caused by poor drainage, the soil is very wet, or is it the dreaded onion rot?
The plants are in a window box filled with multi purpose compost. However soil is pretty wet, I dont think I put enough holes in the bottom

Am I right in assuming onion rot is soil borne so as long as I dont put soil in compost I should be ok with my other plants in seperate tubs?

the leaves on 8 of my garlic are starting to go yellow aswell, is this not good!

It could just be that they aren't suited to growing in our climate, you never know with 'shop-bought' garlic, it might have been grown anywhere in the world! But, I should think that it's the wet soil that's done for them, they really like to be in well-drained soil. I wouldn't plant anything else garlic or onion into that particular compost, just to be on the safe side, chuck it away.

Hmm Thanks Sarz. just taken another look and some of the shallots are ropey too. Both sets of soil pretty boggy, that'll teach me. More holes next time!

Still time to plant some more Your local GC, or B&Q/Focus/Wilko should have spring planting garlic bulbs, and probably shallots too.
