Something dug up my bulbs

I have recently bought a house with 3 acres of land some of which I plan to use for as a vegetable plot. Last week I planted bulbs (a bit late but better late than never) along the side of the lawn. When I returned this week something had dug up a lot of the bulbs (around 20) but had not eaten them. There were definite signs of digging not birds pulling them out.

As I also plan to have chickens I wondered if anyone has any ideas about what may have done this. Could it have been a fox or badger

Could it be Squirrels? They dug a load of mine up and made a right mess!!

Squirrels I think. They have emptied my pots of crocuses.

The only thing that stopped them in the end was that I bought 3 drawstring laundry bags (the netting type) and stretched them over my pots, it seemed to work!!

erm...could it not be rabbits as they LOVE bulbs? Have you burrows around? Would of thought more likely that squirrels, although they also probaby peckish by now!

Doesn't mean you don't have foxes though. Take care when you get the chickens. I do envy you that amount of land!

Even if you dont have foxes now , the minute you get chooks or as in my case ducks the foxes will appear like magnets to iron.

Please protest your flock or you may be in for a nasty shock , bulbs is one thing , feathers everywhere is another

We have over an acre and a half to grow on but all I have prepared is 15 by 30 plus a greenhouse so far. As I learn more I will probably expand my horizons but its a lot of work.

Why I think squirrels are much bigger nuisances than foxes. And if you get chooks squirrels will be in after the eggs - and the chicken food. They're just rats with fancy tails.

I saw the word BADGER in the first post.
We find that they just love tulip bulbs ( if those are some of the bulbs you planted )
Badgers may be loved by some, but they have nearly driven me to give up gardening or move house, digging up the potatoes, carrots, the lawn etc. A few years ago the veg patch looked more like a miniature version of the Somme. Nothing deterred them; I now have an electric fence down the side of the garden from which they emerge.
luckily they don't seem to have worked out that they can go all the way round and come back in that way (so far )
