Spuds in at last !!

Just to let everyone who has helped with my xmas spuds queries that I have finally got some planted!!
I could not get any seed spuds at all so decided to try my hand with supermarket Charlottes and some let from my harvest in July/August.
I have put some of each above in the ground under cover (weed sup material) and also one of each type in a tub.
So heres hoping and praying. If it goes wrong at least I know where Ive gone wrong, ie leaving it too late and using the above types.
I'll keep you all up to date anyway

Well done you!! Been trying to get round to planting mine for weeks but with a poorly horse in the stable and working 8.30 till 5.30 I haven't done it. You have just given me the impetus I needed to get them in tonight.

Thanks Shirl, it took a days hol from work to get them done. I also sorted out my strwb runners so I have a proper nursery going again.
Sorry about your horse, know what you mean, Ive been there.
I had a horse up until 3 yrs ago and when they are ill it takes precedence over everything.......... hope hes Ok soon.
ps whats wrong with him, never know I might have some advice or info that could help

Finally got my 'Jersey Royals' in yesterday but I don't hold out much hope.
I mixed some fresh woodchippings in with the soil, hopefully to generate a bit of heat. If they ever show there heads above ground I intend to wrap with staw and cover with fleece! Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose. I'll stil try and get some seaweed from the coast to give them that authentic taste, and it may even help generate a bit more heat when it rots down!

I've just realised that last post has seen me graduate from a Rooter to a Tuber......not sure whether thats a good thing or not?

What have you planted the potatoes in?

I was tempted to use a cheap back plastic rubbish bin. Unfortunately I could not find any particularly cheap ones. To be honest every DIY store I have looked in have sold out of black bins.

I was told a story by a work colleague about planting supermarket Charlotte potatoes at the start of the normal growing season. They believe they produced one of their best crops ever.

Hi Spuds Up
Ive put them in an ordinary brown plastic garden tub, the type that you put flowers etc in. I had it spare cos I moved some strawb runners to there own pots. I did think about bins but that would have mean't going to buy some, maybe not finding any and all this would take up valuable time!
I have read and been told that horse buckets, the big floppy feed and water ones are good and quite cheap, around £4/£5 each. They have handles so you can drag or move them.
When I get chance I will go to the nearest horse feed place and get some for next year. You have to drill drainage holes in them.

Hi Supersam, he must have got caught in wire and had a darned good go and taking his front hoof off!! The cut was from the heel right round to the front of his hoof, just above the coronet band (no flesh to stitch it up) and getting on for an inch deep - yucky!!! It just kept gaping open when he walked. He has been in the stable for about 4 weeks now and I hope to get him out tonight. He has had my old fella (30) in with him for company as he gets worried being in on his own (spent his whole life with the 'herd'). Thanks for the moral support! Got plenty fresh dung for the spud buckets though!!

By the way, my spuds this year have all been grown one to a tub in the 'flower buckets' you can buy from Morrisons
