Now you're just becoming too intelligent & obscure for me Nick, you're 'twisting my melon, man' as Shaun Ryder from the Happy Mondays would say (plus a few expletives in his case!).
Sorry about your horse Shirley, that sounds horrific - poor thing.
Going back to potatoes I put some cornish new potatoes I got from the supermarket in my 'spud tub' a few weeks ago but no sign of any growth yet.Into every life a little rain must fall.

I know that the ones bought in the shops are imature maincrops, so anyone any idea how tall the foliage is on these? Need to know how much fleece and straw I will needMy Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

Hi Supersam, they are probably doing fine & will show in a few more weeks. I'm trying some supermarket Cornish new potatoes & put them in about 5 weeks ago & was worried that there was no growth showing so I had a fiddle around in the compost & found that some shoots are coming off them, just haven't broken through the surface yet.Into every life a little rain must fall.

This is my contraption photographed today.
I planted out about 16 sprouted tubers of Jersey Royals in ridges. Its hard to make out, but about half of them are through!
I have packed straw around them and I am watering them with liquid seaweed extract to synthesize taste hopefully! If i get a chance to get to the coast I will gather some seawed to put round them also!
The top will be covered with a double layer of horticultural fleece when it gets a bit colder to give them a bit more protection.
