    Hello All

I am fairly new to this - just got lottie last year. I have some asparagus crowns on order and am planning to plant in a raised bed. Last year I got some manure and spread over the planned asapargus bed only now I am worried that the manure was not well rotted as it wasn't dark brown but light brown but was told it would be OK. everything I have read about manure since tells me that it must be well rotted. Will my crowns be OK or should I make a new bed and dig in compost instead?

Please help - I really want to do well with the asparagus, especially as they are not cheap!

I'm not sure that colour is the best indicator - that could depend on how much straw is mixed in with the, erm, poo! The important thing is, what did it smell like? If it smelt like dung, it was probably not well-rotted - it should smell sort of grassy and composty and really quite nice!

Thanks Eyren, I cant really remember now but I dont think it stank - I remember thinking there was a lot of straw in it tho. Anyway I have decided to make raised bed in a different place and not risk it with the pricey asparagus crowns. A generous neighbour covered an area of my lottie with well rotted manure last year so have decided to plant there instead. OH is at lottie now making raised bed - best go down an supervise, taking flask and biccies of course!!!
