  • Can you move lettuce?

Title says it all. Packet says sow in situ, but space not ready yet as no cloche protection.
Does lettuce mind being moved cos I have sown some in a seed tray instead

They'll move fine Fiona. You can single them out or if they are tightly together plant in little clumps and treat as cut and come again. If they never move from the seed tray you'll get baby leaves for garnishes.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I usually start them off at this time of year in modules, sowing 2 seeds per module and them pricking out to get them well started before planting out. Seem to be find on it.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I usually sow them in situ then as they get big enough to handle dig the clump up and space them out

I start mine in a seed tray then transplant. Cut leaves off the same lettuces for almost 3 months last year.

We always start ours off in a tray- when you transplant, it knocks them back a bit- so y transplanting some of them twice will extend the time when you can pick them

My friend ask me last year"do you sow whole packet of lettuce seeds into one tray?"-she did so and then was overwhelmed by lettuce jungle in the tray-nice salad but no heads forming
Sow a pinch of seeds at the time-lettuce grows quite quickly and this way you'll have constant supply of lettuce.
They look a bit "tired" after transplanting but they recover very quickly.

I read in one of the magazines recently to water them in with weak feed rather than just plain water; it helps them establish quicker in their new home

I start all my lettuces in 40 cell (8 x 5) modules. I sow eight different varieties at a time. I have about 12 different seed varieties altogether. I have tried sowing in situ but the slugs get them. This way at least you get something back.

You can also transplant them into containers. I use recycled plastic boxes which I fill with compost and then transplant six different varities into each box. They look great when they come up, the slugs can't get at them when they are on the table on the patio or the window ledge and they make impressive gifts. OH gets to pick different varieties for her lunch, helps draw her attention away from the seed/compost bills!
