  • Two questions that only a true amateur would ask!

    Hmmm.

Really silly questions, but I'm going to ask them!

1- Can you grow an orange/pear/apple/cherry (etc) tree just from one of the seeds/pips you get in the fruit? Or does it need to be a 'special' seed?

2- I have sown some Bizzy Lizzy seeds in a trat indoors. The instructions have told me not to 'bury' the seeds. I have pushed them down a little, but they are still exposed. Should I lightly cover them with soil?

    Thanks!

No question is silly if you need to know the answer.

1 . Seeds from these fruit will grow into trees, but you will not know if the fruit will be worthwhile or not for a good few years. Also pears apples and cherries are usually grafted onto different rootstocks, not grown on their own roots, to control the size of the tree. You might get a really good fruit, like the Bramley apple, but chances are, you won't That is why people usually buy ready grown fruit trees, rather than raising from seed.

    2. Bizzy Lizzy seeds are very fine and do not need covering. They should germinate and send their roots down into the soil without any problems. Well mine did last year, but I forgot to take the lid off the propagator and the temp inside rocketed on a hot day in the greenhouse, so I cooked em

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Busy Lizzies are tender, so you can't put them outside until after your last frost (May?)

Make sure you have somewhere cosy to keep them for the next 2 months
