Peas and Beans!

We have almost finished digging up our new veg plot, and we are very new to this, so I am hoping that someone might be able to help.

The soil is, in places, quite stony. We've removed as many as the big stones as possible, but there are still a few around. I'll lose my mind if I spend much more time digging up stones!

I was going to plant some beans and peas on the stoniest area. Could anyone tell me if they will be happy there? If not, what else could I plant?

Hi there thesuze. Can't see any problem with planting peas and beans on the stoney area (as long as there's more soil than stones). Peas and beans are big seeds and so they should be OK.

Congratulations on clearing some ground for a veg plot, you'll not regret it. Give it a few months and you'll be looking at other parts of the garden and wondering about putting veg. in there as well. Have fun on the plot.

lol there my OH insisted I put in a fence to split the garden so I wouldn't creep any further..... so I nicked a patch on the side of the house and built a 19.5 ft raised bed and put 7 pots there with wigwams for peas

Coming back from the threadjack ... Shouldn't be a problem for the peas and beans though. Look at the stones as an hobby and in a few years, you'll get the numbers down to where you want them, or build a raised bed over them.....

I started (autumn 2007) digging a plot 12 x 5 metres.
This year I have three plots, 12x5, 15x4, 18x2.5.




and I'm still not sure where to put my pumpkins!!!!!

Good on you for 'spreading' out a bit , I would be quite happy for my missus to dig up our whole lawn so I could replace it with veg. Sadly I'm the only digger in my household so the patch is still pretty small.

That's why I still have a ride on lawnmower and not a combine harvester

Peas & beans are thirsty plants (that's why we make bean trenches for them).
Stony ground tends to be very free-draining.

If you want to grow beans well, you will need to shove some well-rotted compost in the planting hole, and mulch with wet newspaper or something, to keep moisture around the roots.
