Confused potato question

When do I plant my spuds - I thought I had it all worked out and was going to plant this weekend but now I am confused as I read that the earlies go in first then 2 weeks later 2nd earleis then mains and then late mains.

I thought that they all went in together and stayed in longer depending if they are earlies or lates.

Which is the right way please and is this weekend too soon?

As far as I understand it, you are right. Earlies and maincrops etc just refer to the period of time they need to mature. I have got mine in already so I think you will be ok with this weekend

hi there, i agree with selfraising even though im a beginner. I have put all mine in to differentr tubs at the same time. I did the same last year and did quite well (even though i do say so myself!)

Surely it depends on whether or not you are concerned about early frosts damaging the haulm. Two years ago we had a strong late frost in late May! I have put two rows of earlies in last weekend and covered them with bubble wrap to warm them up. This will stay on as long as necessary and brings them on faster. However if the haulm is vigorous I will have to watch out for frosts before removing the bubble wrap. Alan

Yes you are right, you must take the weather into consideration. Mine have gone in but I have fleece at the ready.

As it was St Patrick's day yesterday, I put my potatoes into the bags. I'm growing 1st earlies and 2nd earlies only - but what seems like a huge amount because I could only find fairly large bags of chitting potatoes at the garden centre when I looked.

I dont' have a greenhouse, so I have got mine up against the house for extra warmth and protection, and will be ready to cover them if we have frost when they start coming through.

We are having a barbecue in just under 10 weeks time, so I'm hoping to harvest some 1st earlies to have then .

Thank goodness for that - I thought I had lost the plot!! Well, lots of digging for me this weekend. The weather forecast is good so looking forward to a day in the fresh air.
