  • Novice Courgette Growing

I've just planted 3 courgette seeds as instructed on the packet, in individual pots in moist compost, covered with clingfilm in my spare room.

The packet doesnt give any watering recommendations - should I be watering them now or leave it a while? I don't want to drown them!

    Any advice would be fab.

The seed compost should have been moist when you planted them so they'll be fine for now. Once they germinate - take the clingfilm off and give them a wee drink of water (I usually use room temperature water for seedlings)

Transplant them into individual pots when they're big enough to handle. Just be aware that they do take a wee while to germinate. Mine took 2 weeks.

    good luck, Victoria

If the compost is already moist, I'd leave it and just keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn't dry out (the clingfilm will help). When the seedlings have come through, take off the clingfilm and water just enough to keep the compost moist - it'll depend on how warm it is and hiw much sun the pots get. I tend to put pots of seedlings in a shallow tray of water for 10 mins or so, rather than watering from the top; when the water has been taken up by the compost and the top of it is sufficiently moist, I take the pot out of the tray and let any excess drain away.

You will quickly learn to tell what needs water by the weight of the pot.
If it's light, water it. Otherwise, don't.
