hi all

just wondered should i have started sowing my indoor seedlings by now? because i've had a mad busy couple of weeks moving house and digging up the HUGE garden that im allowed to grow in (wwooohooo) the only thing i've done to now is build a raised bed, dig up the garden and chitted my tatties

Plant according to conditions, not according to calendar. Everyone is itching to get going as the days get longer again, but stick your hand in the soil and think how little energy the seed is going to get from the ambient heat...that's why some farmers were once rumoured to do "bare a**e planting", if it was warm enough for them to sit on the soil then...
If you look at some of the allotment/veg gardening books, they give you lists of germination/growing temperatures for different vegetables, that helps me a lot in deciding.

Shed loads of time, I just got impatient. Hence leggy tomatoes etc

Most things will be fine to plant now. It's getting a bit late for garlic and for growing maincrop onions from seed; also a tad on the late side for some summer crops that need a long warm growing season, like aubergines. Apart from that, no - most stuff sown now will catch up with seed sown earlier in the spring. At the moment I have the following on the go: garlic, onions, leeks, parsnips, celeriac, cauliflower, calabrese, potatoes, broad beans, toms, chillies, sweet peppers, aubergines, okra, early carrots, lettuce, spinach, basil and coriander - and the vast majority of those were only sown in the last fortnight or so. I could have waited until next month, but I had the seed ready and was itching to start!

So, get those spuds in the ground in the next two weeks, and started planning your sowing for the rest of the year!

I'm waiting till tomorrow or sunday to sow my Toms and French Beans as it seemed to the best 'moon planting days' this week for those plants.
