i put my windowsill beans out in the day and in again at night, and yesterday with the wind nearly killed them off. About 1/4 of the leaves are shrivelled and paper thin.

As these are now producing, and the borlottis are now starting to turn speckled, I don't want to kill them just yet!!! So, they are now at the back door sheltered, rather than outside the back door in the sun, where the wind can get them.

We direct sow ours in early June... though we are a tad further North than you! They grow so fast that we're usually picking beans in Mid-July though. Starting them in the greenhouse would give me a slightly earlier crop, but not by much so I can't be bothered with the hassle.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
