  • What time of day to sow?

Probably a daft question award coming up so apologies in advance but does it matter what time of day you sow seeds? Does it make any difference?

If you are not following any method, i.e. moon planting, then anytime is good

Unless you are following something like biodynamic gardening, when specific times of day are under the influence of particular planets/constellations ( ), then I don't reckon it makes any difference.

One minor exception - if you are sowing seeds of tender plants (e.g. tomatoes) indoors, you probably want to bring your compost inside (if you store it outdoors) and maybe even let it warm up in the propagator for a day or two before sowing. That should get germination off to a prompt start!

I sow when the mood takes me. That can be any time at all! If you have a life you have to fit seed sowing in. I can't be doing with faffing! Seeds want to grow. As soon as you give them the right conditions, they're off!

I sow whenever I have a minute. I admit I pay lip-service to biodynamics, but usually only the right day, not the right time.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

If it's a dead hot day then you're best off sowing in the evening when the seeds won't dry out in the heat of the day but to be honest then I just do it when I have the time and it seems to work OK.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I was in my potting shed til 8 pm yesterday doing my sweetpeas, runner beans, and peas, so I hope it doesn't make a difference...nah, should be fine. I put them in my mini greenhouse afterwards (which I can wrap in bubblewrap if it looks like a frost is looming when I've got more tender things in it), otherwise I tend to start tender plants off on the window sill anyway.

I've never thought about it to be honest - just whenever I get the time. I have to say my favourite time is in the shed at night with the light on - makes me feel like a proper gardener. Can't do it at the moment - there's too much in the shed.
