  • How does your garden grow/ jobs today

    Hi everyone

Yesterday was warm and sunny and all of the seedlings needed a good water and inspection for potting on or moving positions etc. My tomato plants will need larger pots soon, maybe a job for Sunday.

The raised beds that were prepared in January have been covered with weed fabric and polythene and should now be warmed up and weed free ready for planting the first of my lettuce plants which are quite a good size and were raised in unheated greenhouse at end of January.

I have a hilly area of grass in the garden that I want to clear and sow some wild flowers into, we already have lots of bees and butterflies but I want to encourage as much as I can.

The area behind the summerhouse needs preparing for potatoes, its just a grassy patch at the moment but will be a good spot for spuds.

Over the next weeks and months there will be a mile of jobs/chores/tasks to achieve and I am looking forward to the satisfaction of jobs well done and productive tasks.

What are you doing in your garden? how does your garden grow?

I'm waiting for my Dahlia's as they are the whole backbone of my garden, if they don't come up its going to be bare soil! I've just been mainly keeping the weeds down. Oh and I buried a big bit of reinforced concrete at the top of the garden, as I've got no way of getting rid of it

I've been playing concrete slab chess, trying to work out where my next two teeny-weeny raised beds are going to fit. Then I dug over the soil somewhat gingerly whilst the neighbour leaned over the back wall and regaled me with tales of the 'funny goings on' in my house many years ago... did Barry the cat-murdering alcoholic REALLY commit suicide, as his volatile wife claimed? Thankfully I dug up nothing more interesting than some broken glass (evidence of their final fight?), lumps of metal (murder weapon?) and half a pencil (was he forced to sign a confession before she 'did him in'?)

Oh yeah, and I've got some plants and things as well...

I am digging up the couch grass and dandelions that have taken control of my plot. My father-in-law is over for a visit from Australia and he's a much keener gardener than my husband. He's doing the digging and I'm doing the shaking the dirt off the weeds, raking and removing. I can't believe how much more effective it is with two of us.

I am sorting out 2 of my compost bins - couch grass has got in at the front - found out that some nearby trees have got their roots in as well. Got my OH weeding in the front garden and sorting out a border. Checked seedlings in the mini greenhouse and gave them a good watering. If the weather is reasonable tomorrow will finish off the bins & get some more compost out onto the borders and sow some salad into the raised beds.

I bet you find like me Fiona that the more space you plant up, the more you need. I keep pinching more and more lawn to plant veg and I'm looking at the flower border and thinking it could be even more space for veg!

Hi BumbleB, three of my grandchildren have helped me seed beetroot, spring onions, radishes and lettuce outside this morning. The sun was shining and your friends were buzzing. The carrots are up and the peas are starting to climb. I'm in South Yorkshire so doing well for April. I'm going to try watercress this season - wish me luck.

                    I DO WISH YOU LUCK

I awoke this morning to bright sunshine on the kent coast. I was pleased to welcome 8 courgette seedlings that had all popped through overnight. This roused my entusiasm to get some jobs done today, so after other chores it was off to the garden centre to spend a voucher I got for Mothers day.

I have been arms deep in potting compost and small pots/trays etc, seed pks everywhere, complete mess really - have never found a tidy way to work yet, I make such a mess !

Still : Some more squashes, butternut and winter fiesta all sown, and dwarf french been so fingers crossed. Also pricked out lots of smaller flower seedlings, and potted on 20 toms.

What has everyone else been doing ? we had sun in kent but has cooled right down now.

Ok, much better start today, began by preparing all of my labels (useing some thick card for now)

I have sowed some more courgettes, some carrots in the garden and some parsnips. OH went to get compost as its last day of homebase offer (75L for £3) and picked up the free trays they give away.

Still have the potato patch to prepare but they are chitting nicely.
