  • I Planned to be so organised..............

Well I did. Back in November when I started a few seeds, I noted dates etc in a notebook, then noted how many days til germination.

Now................. I seem to have moved pots around, mislaid labels, not kept up the notebook!! The problem was trying to use one label for each tray of seed pots - but I have moved things around trying to gain space on the windowsils and in the greenhouse and now will have to rely on recognising what things are!

I refelected this evening that I am in a bit of a muddle.

EVERY POT needs a label. I run out regularly.

I cut them down and down until you can only just write 'b champ O' [bedford champion onion] on it.

I'm off myself to wilkos tomorrow to buy lots more packets of labels...you can use plastic milk cartons cut into strips as a last ditch attempt....

Thanks Zazen, I was wondering if there was anything that could be used as labels, or if anyone sells large/huge bags at value price.

Hi BB I'm lucky in that my husband and grandchildren love ice lollies and I keep every stick. I even stick sticky labels over the top to re-use. I bet you can buy lolly sticks cheaply in bulk if you're not a lolly licker?

I've started cutting up my milk cartons and popping a bit of masking tape over the bit I want to write on so it's easier to use pencil on them.

I tend to like to write loads stuff on my labels, as it's my first attempt at growing things so I'm trying out different places, temperatures etc, so I like using my milk cartons as I can cut them to whatever size I need them!

I use nice copper labels that just say "lettuce" or "spinach" on them for module trays, but for things where I'm growing lots of different varieties in separate pots, milk carton labels are the only practical option. Yesterday I had to pot on and label 59 seedlings of around a dozen different varieties (tomatoes, peppers and chillies - mostly for sale at work, I hasten to add!), and there's no way I was going to spend money on that lot!

One year I had a tomato binge and by the time they were in 3" pots I had about 20 each of a dozen different varieties - way too many labels to write to . . .

              I had a big bit of paper with (1) - Variety A (2) Variety B (3) Variety C, etc.,
and then stuck labels into the pots which just say 1,2,3, and so on. As long as the key doesn't get lost (and I had a copy indoors just in case), it was much quicker than writing the full name on each label.

i cut up ice cream containers throughout the year, and save them in a big jar,use the lid and body,to write on them the best thing i found is a fine nibed permenant marker from wilko's,i think they meant for clothing labels, and for freezer use,is same size as a regular pen.

                  Thanks everyone,

I will start saving plastic to use for labels. I have used some thick card today that should be fine until I get some more labels. I will also look in the pound shops etc.
