Sorry for this stupid question - when you say you plant peas in the loo roll inners - how many do you put in each loo roll ? I've only ever used them for sweet peas and then I sow one seed in each.

I use one of those scoop things from a packet of washing powder to put my soil/compost in. DDL ps martini for sweet peas, just be on the safe side I would put two in each one - just in case! in case of what, I'm not sure but there you go!

Used loo rolls for planting as everyone else has suggested. They always seem to get moldy, but doesn't seem to harm the seedlings in any way.I've always presumed it was the pots starting to decompose but I dont know for sure!

Thanks Kirsty - that means I've got to collect a lot more rolls Shouldn't be a problem, the kids seem to use half a roll every time they go - abd before anyone says anything - no, it's nothing to do with what I feed them

It makes no difference what you feed them. Ours use half a roll at a time too. I've only planted 9 pea plants so far, going to do some more in a week or so.

Hi kirsty, what type of peas are you planting at this time of year and will you be planting them outdoors and are they frost hardy?
Sorry for all the questions but i've never planted peas at this time of year.

I've planted Meteor Peas if that helps as they are for overwintering apparently. I've also put one in a big pot in the kitchen and it has sprouted already.

I don't use loo rolls, have tried before but they just decompose or spread mildew across the seedlings before they get in the ground. Paper pots fare better but root trainers and normal pots always do the best - I tend to buy mine second hand from the garden centre, 50p for 30.

I used loo rolls in the Spring without any problems of mould or mildew, but was going to use them now for sweet -peas. I can see how it could potentially be more of a problem going that much longer before they go in the ground. That is assuming that that is what you do with them: is the idea that you get them started then plant them out as you would with broad beans?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, but this is the first year I will have done Autumn sowing of any kind.

Some advice I was given was to sow peas in a length of guttering (drill drainage holes in bottom, line with a few sheets of newspaper and fill with compost and then sow the peas). Once they've germinated, you dig a trench (same depth as guttering) and gently slide off the contents of the guttering into the trench. Haven't tried it yet but might give it a go.

I'm into recycling as much as possible too - need to keep watch for someone having new gutters fitted (as long as the ones they replace are plastic)

I've been told you can also do this with carrots and it works quite well.
