Can I grow cabbages in.....

I bought a tray of already established cabbage and now they need planting out.
Can I plant these in the large square margerine tubs and buckets? Or possibly poly pots like I have bought for potatoes?
The only ground I have to plant them in got relly boggy last year because of the rain so I'd prefer not to plant in there until I hear a probable long term weather forcast.

Can the poly pots be used for everything? How deep do roots tend to go on plants that grow above the surface?
Something thats moveable would be ideal for sheltering on really windy days.

Cabbage and other brassicas like to have very firm soil, and fairly deep to support the tall top growth.

Marg tubs are no good, but buckets might do you (I don't know what a poly pot is)

To make use of my greenhouse through the winter I've been growing various winter brassicas in buckets and containers. I was surprised at how small a pot was needed to grow them to fruition.

I now have Spring cabbage (Durham Early) starting to heart up. They are in 6 inch pots filled with last years soil based spent tomato plant compost.

A single brassica in a container the size of a bucket grows very well indeed, as can be testified by my huge PSB!

You're right Paul, I'm finding that the best weather forecast is to look through the window! I have turned a lot of my "failures" in the garden over the years into firm successes, I think it's all part of the process.
