We must have been unlucky then, every plant we looked at in both Aldi and Lidl were little better than barely rooted cuttings. The trees we bought from a specialist dealer cost very little more and were producing fruit far quicker than 1 year maidens would have done.

I will be having a look at them next week but I think the important thing regardless of where you buy is to look at the plant and ensure it has good roots and is healthy. I have seen sickly looking plants in a well-know nursery at very hefty prices. It pays to shop around with knowledge on your side.Bright Blessings

The fruit bushes & trees for Saturday 28th at Lidl were advertised on the leaflet which comes through our door from them so I think you should be able to get them up here in the North, it's just a case of whether & how many they get of them in each store. I got a nice tray of pansies from them the other week & generally the plants are O.K. but I have had 1 or 2 packs of seed from them which have either not come up or not been what's on the picture!Into every life a little rain must fall.

Can't complain Earthbabe, at the prices they charge I'll forgive them the odd mishap, I once nurtured a tray with only a couple of seedlings which had germinated until I realised they were weeds! Most of the seeds I've had have been fine though.Into every life a little rain must fall.

Although they weren't due in until Saturday the fruit trees in our Lidl have arrived. Quite a good selection - Cherry, Stella, Plum, Victoria, and a Gage. Three or four varieties of apple who according to the info act as pollinators for each other (bought Granny Smith and Cox's Orange Pippin) and two or three varieties of pear. No info on the cards re which stock they are grafted onto only max growing height depending on growing and training.
I'm trying to convince Mr E that the apples will make nice espaliers in the garden and the cherry can go on the lottie in place of the plum that died last year.
He's not convinced at the moment.Bright Blessings

Shirlthegirl, thats exactly what happened to me. Went to get a Victoria and a gage but they had no Victoria. I assumed they had sold out but now am wondering did they have Victoeia at all. Anyway, like you i bought two gages.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Didn't manage to get there until turned twelve. They had two varieties of pear, two of apples and the stella cherry left; no plums. When I checked the pollination details I found none cross pollinated so I only bought the self pollinating cherry. Also bought two blackcurrants. Hoping for dry weather now so I get them in the ground.Live each day as if it was your last because one day it will be

I bought the cherry too. Haven't seen any bushes yet but haven't been in since Friday when there were still loads in the boxes.
Maybe everyone down here who want to grow fruit is posh and goes to Hilliers or takes their chances with the duff stuff frequently on offer at a well-known national hardward chain with a large orange logo.Bright Blessings
