I recentley purchased 3 1 year old asparagus crowns. I have planted them in containers as per PW's post. My question is, they had very spindly asparagus growing on them. I know I can't pick and eat them but do I need to cut them off or do I just let them keep growing?

Let them grow! They need to establish a good root system and they do this by photosynthesis, so encourage the ferns and stake them.

Thank you, do I need to feed them. They have a lot of manure in with themSusiewoosie

I'm still waiting for my spears to show. I haven't given up and hope they will appear in May sometime.

Cut my first spear today. This is their 3rd year without having been cut, I just let them grow to ferns the first 2 yaers. The taste was even better than I had thought it would be. The rest are just peeping through the soil now, a little later than last year.

last year we planted three asparagus crowns in a tub and they had spindly shoots which we left to flower into ferns and small yellow flowers...
this year we have had six shoots most of them as thick as your thumb! Only 1 thin spindly one and a snapped one (Culprit=chickens?) So very tempted to eat them! They look so tasty! Hubb told me to leave alone and they are really tall now! foot high? anyway, not allowed to eat this year so will be looking forward to next years growth and I hope lots of shoots!

Thanks Susie, interesting stuff! Ive been looking at some crowns on ebay and am tempted to get some 2 year old crowns that are listed. I guess they would be good for a harvest a little earlier that 1 year old ones!
Also ordered 10 30lt pots to put 4 or 5 crowns in and the rest to expand my growing space
