Admit it... did you plant out too early?

March and April come, the first signs of spring are evident, a few warm days and we plunge headlong into planting... and then... disappointment.

Were you one of these people - what happened to you. Did your runner beans get chill-damaged by a northeasterly at 7 degrees C? Have your newly emerged sweet corn seedlings failed to green up, did your tomatoes plants turn purple, or are your outdoor cucumbers or other crops just sitting there rotting in the soil?

It is much warmer here and I have resisted planting out any of my veg seedlings yet, although they have been hardening off for over a week now every day in the open and at night back in the unheathed GH, will probably get them all in over the first week of May. I have also hardened off many of my small flower seedlings so everything is pretty well ready. Many of my neighbours have their R beans out though.

I suppose its colder up north though!

Nope, only hardy stuff out prior to our hols, and will start the tender stuff off when we get back.

So far so good, although almost had a close call last week when we had an unexpected frost overnight, luckily a fellow grape gave all of us a heads up and disaster was averted....

third year of growing my own and think I'm okay so far! have not planted out yet! hardening things off all the time. will be glad when I can plant out though..house looks like the `day of the triffids'

Have been tempted but as yet only hardy crops outside. Chap next to me planted his french beans out at the weekend but he has got about another 100 waiting in the wings if they should fail.

I may have been a tad early with the planting out - I have tomatoes, courgettes, squash and sweetcorn all outside in their final positions, but it does tend to be milder here than on the mainland (England not France!)

I have just checked the long range forecast, and I reckon that if they come through the next three or four days unscathed, then I will be home and dry - but I'm keeping everything crossed!

Well I have some beans in but they were given to me by a neighbour so that doesnt count! Mine are still in pots on the windowsil.

Nothing in the ground that won't survive. Beans went out last week but it's warmer down south. Greenhouse absolutely stuffed to the gills though.

all my stuff has been out for the last month ... except the sweetcorn cos the chooks ate it all .... and nope everythings doing fine

Still getting used to the climate here, upt' north things would still be tucked up nice and warm for another few weeks but everyone seems to be letting them loose outside so i've risked it this weekend. Still have a few in reserve just in case I'm right and it is too early.

Haven't put anything half hardy out yet tho' GH is bursting at the seams, our problem is not so much frosts, tho' we have had more of them this year, as wind, yesterday was a real blast and that's when stuff gets burnt. I lost runner and climbing french several times last year, this year I'm trying to be more careful, must admit I was a bit too eager with the courgettes and have 30 - 40 of them leaping at me every time I open the GH door!

The only things in the ground here are onions, shallots and garlic so they are all fine. However, I have pots of broad beans and runner beans which are outside and fine. All the brassicas are outdoors, hardened off along with the peas and sweetpeas. Spuds are in buckets and in a raised bed - various stages of development. Tomatoes have been moved from house to greenhouse and are happy there. Courgettes are through as is one cucumber and one melon (though it is slow to lose the seed case). We are close to the sea here though and don't get much frost.

I moved house last year so I'm growing in different conditions from I had before.
I wanted to give the sweet corn a good long growing season so started them early as I usually do.
I hadn't bargained for how much they would like the conservatory.
They're in here 3 feet high and I can't plant them out until end of May.
I can see disaster looming.
Everything else is about right.
