  • Am I too late?

Firstly, Hello! Im new to all of this but the site seems a very good place to start

Until now I have been unable to construct my raised bed. I plan to make it where an unused flower bed currenly is. It will be approx 4m x 1m and 18" deep. Hopefully starting tomorrow.

Questions are, is it too late to start this season??

Is the bed big enough and for how many veg varieties?

Also, due to the previous planting there are still quite a lot of roots and shoots coming through, can i use a liner?

    Thanks

    Welcome there DP.

Definately not to late to start now. There's loads you can get started now. Peas, Beans Cougettes, Lettuce, Spinach and loads more!

As to your bed, is it possible to to dig out most of the shoots etc?

Thanks for the reply, yes im going to have a good bash tomorrow at clearing it but it was pretty overgrown when we bought the house and the soil is littered with roots etc. On the plus side, its crack on South facing so everything grows like a weed!

Will deck boards be suitable for constructing it?

Deck boards will be fine... there's someone on here who's used empty wine bottles (not me btw )

I wouldn't normally advocate a liner but if the bed is going to be 18 inches high a permeable liner in the bottom and part way up the sides would not interfere with the veggies roots!

Hi DP, sounds like you're going great guns. If there's anything you'd like but you think might be a bit late you can probably get plants in a garden centre now. I got some broad beans for a friend last week, might be a bit late but will come to something in time, but there's so much that now is just right for as the others have said. Enjoy yourself.
