nibbling radishes

Anyone make any suggestions as to what is likely to be nibbling on my radishes? I planted them between my growing onions and all the tops have been nibbled! Ill try and get a picture up later.

on the plus side it stopped what ever it was from nibbling my onions!

OR, it could be flea beetle. If the leaves just have holes rather than being completely chomped like a slug would. Flea beetle wouldn't have touched your onions as it tends to concentrate on brassicas, and seems to be particularly fond of the radish side of the family. One good thing would be that if you leave them to grow they'll probably recover and produce a reasonable crop without the need for pesticides - though I admit they look unsightly.

If you check out the bbc gardening website they have a programe on there where you answer questions then it narrows down the bug and tells you a way to treat the problem too. It may be helpfull.

planting them between the onions means the slugs get on the onions. found this out the hard way at midnight a few days ago.

It will be slugs. They love radishes.

Flea beetle will make holes in the foliage, but not eat the radish itself.

The actual leaves of the radishes are fine and intact, its the actual radish the little blighters are eating!

I noteced they have mowed the top off my nice new strawberry plants too! It was all weeds last year so i assume i still have a high slug/snail population. Is it too late for a biocontrol?

Damn slugs are ALWAYS eating my radishes! I sometimes wonder if I grow for our own consumption or to feed the wildlife population - *sigh*

try crushed eggshells around the base of plants - prickly eggshells stop the slugs. May need to re-apply after too much rain/watering, soil splashing on eggshells makes them sink in the soil a bit and aren't as prickly. I used horticultural grade sand around the little gem lettuces last year and they were all intact - not a sluggy nibble in sight!

I wonder if a slug has any useful purpose? Their very existence seems useless to me.
