  • Too late for?

    Hi everyone
Being a keen newbie I am merrily sowing seeds every day and have many established veg plants. But, I was wondering, if it is now too late to start off some of the veg varieties.

Is it too late to start

    Tomatoes, Sweetcorn, Chilli, Peppers ?

Do these need a longer season than we now have left.

    Thanks for advice.

Pretty sure your'e ok for the toms and peppers, i would give them a go, but not sure about the sweetcorn as it needs a long growing season, and needs quite a bit of time to avoid a dissapointing crop, BUT!! i'm sure someone more experienced in the sweetcorn department would be able to give you some better advise

You'll probably be ok with all of them, but may not get a good harvest from the chillies unless you overwinter them and use them for enext year.

not sure about them all but i would have thought you would be ok with sweetcorn and toms if you get them off quickly not sure about peppers and chillis but there will be someone wiser than me along soon

Peppers and chillis....yes they do need a longer season but when has that ever stopped us from owing in May??? At least you can choose the specimens with the best fruits on and bring them indoors in October for them to ripen. I sowed more of all the above at the weekend, so I'm just as hopeful as anyone.

If you're quick with your sweetcorn it should catch up, I think. If you want to get tomatoes, peppers and chillis a bit quicker, you could buy a plant or 2 from a market or garden centre, then the ones you sow will be a bonus late crop

Bit too late for toms, chillis and peppers but no probs at all for sweetcorn.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

If you can give the tomatoes and chillis and peppers a constant germination temperature of around 25 degC then they will germinate in 2 to 7 days (toms will be the quickest).

If you can then give them 20 degC and plenty of light for another 4 to 6 weeks then you will have plants ready to go outside (or greenhouse) in early to mid-June.

You should be able to get at least 4 trusses of toms and plenty of chillis during the rest of the season.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
                  Leave Rotten Fruit.
                  Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
                  Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!
Il n'est si méchant pot qui ne trouve son couvercle.

I never sow sweetcorn until mid-May and always get a good crop, they'll be ready for planting out in 4 - 5 weeks and in my experience seem to do much better than those sown earlier. I'm planning on sowing mine on Sunday.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I think I will try a few of each, toms, chilli and peppers. And get the sweetcorn sown as well. I suppose its got to be worth a try, I have only just gained some space.
