I've never used hormone rooting powder either - not since - many years ago - I read that it's only effective for about 6 months. Who uses THAT much powder? And the rest has to be chucked. I never found much difference in strike rate when I stopped either.

I'm having a go with lavender, rosemary, thyme, backcurrant sage, jasmine and mock orange.
Anything with silver or hairy leaves does not like moisture: so don't cover lavender.

Also, you can't just snip a bit off any old time of the year. Sap rises and falls, and cuttings success depends on timing.

August is a good time for lots of things: Royal Horticultural Society - Gardening Advice: Lavender & Rosemary Cuttings

just go to Google and type in "propagate .... (lavender/sage/jasmine etc).

Things with a woody stem are definetely better in July or August. Try and get the bit where this year's growth starts and take a heel of old wood and trim it a bit. I took lots of cuttings from my old garden when we came here - we moved in September!
