    Hello!
Instead of letting my butternut squashes trail over the ground can they be trailed up a trellis instead?
I've got 2 plants, each in their own large pot. They're currently living in the cold greenhouse at night and outdoors during the day until they harden. Then will be outdoors for the rest of the summer.

    Thank you!

I have bon bon squash (which is supposed to be bush) it has been in the ground for a month now and is about 2m long with two other 'arms' coming out at other angles (think three legged starfish). If it carrys on like this, by autumn it is going to be HUGE. Once I have 1 or 2 fruits formed on each stem I think I shall cut off the ends and plant into the ground. Still, they are big plants I wouldn't put in any more than three in a bed 1.5x5.

I also have a pumpkin Big Max which is even bigger. This is my first year with squash. I have 2 pumpkin from saved seed from halloween, 3 bon bon, 2 blue ballet, 2 black futsu 2 musquee de provence and 1 big max.

Many thanks for all the replies...the plants have been in the ground for a few weeks now and although there has been a slow start, more leaves are showing. How frequent should I water?

Looking at the pictures on the link, I would say not - that bed only has 2 plants in it and they've filled the whole thing!

I've got a couple of Butternut Squash plants from a friend, but I'm seriously doubting I'll be able to grow them now as I didn't realise they got THAT big!

I have probably put too many in a 1m square bed - about 10, lol.
They seem to be doing very well and they have a large strong trellis behind them that I hope to train them up!

This year I have put 3 squashes in a bed 6m long. I also put a trellis type affair in the middle for my lemon cuc's to grow up. I fear that in my absence the squash triffids will have climbed the trellis too. Clearly not too much forethought went into that decision.

I rarely water anything Giley, unless it becomes tooooo dry, but then my beds are full of mulch so they do hold the water quite well.

Just out if interest, what type mulch do you use?

                    Many thanks!

I grew a butternut squash last year for the first time and it trailed over an enormous area. I was really excited because it developed about 20 fruits on it but then not many of them matured. Beginners mistake - I have since been told by an experienced grower that I should have pinched the growing tips out once there were a few fruit on it so the plant could focus it's resources on the fruit rather than covering more area. Those that did get eaten were lovely.
