used seedling compost

Hi, this is my second year of growing veg so am still very new to it. Could anyone advise me about the compost left in the seed tray once I've potted the young plants on, it seems a ridiculous waste to discard it. I can see that there may be some of the original seed there that may not have yet germinated, but would it be ok to reuse it for sowing fresh seed of a different type in the tray its in?

I spread mine on the beds or mix it up with fresh compost when potting up into containers. Definitely don't discard it.

I top all my borders up with it. Most of the ungerminated seed pops up eventually.

Makes for an interesting display.

I put mine onto the flower beds.
I would have thought that it only contained enough nutrients to sustain the seeds once, not another batch so I always use fresh for seeds and recycle the old.

I use mine to bulk up new compost in containers, or empty into beds, but never use it a second time to germinate seeds. As janeyo says, most of the nutrients will have been depleted.

Does the specialist seed compost have as much nutrient content as normal multi purpose compost?

I stopped using seed compost and haven't really noticed any difference in germination rates. I just break up any lumpy bits of MPC in my fingers.

Which? Did a survey of composts and in the seed compost category joint second place went to J. Arthur Bower's Multi-Purpose Compost, and Homebase Multi Purpose Compost was just a few points lower in joint third place. Both were a lot cheaper per litre than the specialist seed composts that won and shared second and third places.

The article refers to 2008 selling prices, so I guess they may not have been using the very latest formulas.
