I won't be planting mine out until the first week in June (space not yet cleared, they don't like the cold and I want them to grow a bit bigger so they scare the slugs...) and they need a lot of space. Generally plant mine at least 1m apart to give them plenty of room to wander.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

When you plant them out look on the plant and you will see wich way the leader wants to go and plant them with the leaders pointing to to rest of the garden you do not want to use....jacob

I've planted my single pumpkin out but surrounded it with three panes of glass and another on top to make a mini cold frame!

My pumpkin plants are not growing very fast and the older leaves are going brown and crispy whilst the new central growth is OK. Is this a matter of them being too cold in an unheated greenhouse?

My courgettes went the same, I think it was the cold also. I put them out too early but are doing ok now after putting a cut out plastic bottle around them. I have this solution on standby for my pumpkins I will be putting out this week.

Hi Snadger - on another thread I had some advice from Matt who said that the first true leaf is opposite the direction of the vine so you can "aim" your plant in the direction you want it to sprawl, which would explain your experience? I'm hoping to get mine out this weekend and now I'm Confused.com.
