Cheap Netting?

Hi, I have run out of netting for my brassicas - I got the last lot from Lidl which is brilliant but I cannot afford to spend much this time - can anyone suggest where I might find cheap netting suitable for covering kale/psp/cabbages?

I got some netting from wilkinsons for £1.99- not sure of the size as i can't find it on the website so it might be worth you checking in the store!

It depends on what you want it for, if it's just to keep the birds off then I got some really cheap stuff from the COOP for 99p per roll. If you want to keep insects off then I'm affraid you'll have to fork out quite a bit more.

i did wonder about net curtains - would they not be too dense?

i need to keep butterflies off and pigeons....

I just adapted a discarded trampoline enclosure for the job. It works great and my brassicas are looking very happy. All I did was sew the top together with gardening wire from instore and sit it on a frame made from garden canes. The end result looks good and even has a zip up door as a bonus:-)

Grr, I'm going to have to buy loads of netting, I think. I'll need it for the berries and maybe the beans?

But today it looks like I'll need it to keep the *insert worst possible phrases here* cats off. I thought my oriental brassicas were safe because they were big and covered the ground, but today I went out to find that some cat with tummy problems had pooed amongst my pak choi and scratched up a whole chinese cabbage (it's shredded) to cover it up. I'm so cross and upset and need to do something to keep them off. And to add insult to injury, there was a slug on the cabbage.

I'm going out today but will leave extra early to pop into Wilkos to get some netting. I like cats, but I really wish that people would take more responsibility for their pets. If a dog did that, you'd be able to complain about it, but it's ok for cats to do what they wnat for some reason.

Over the years I've tried allsorts of netting from all different places.

The best, bar none, is debris netting (3m wide, about 75p a metre on eBay).

UV stable, lasts for years, it doesn't rip, the holes are small, light & rain gets through. Job done. £35 well spent.

Thanks for this, Two Sheds. I never thought of looking on eBay! I have to net just about everything against the usual suspects, but also against blackbirds!!! They dig up any visible soil, presumably in search of worms, uprooting even the sturdiest plants as they go. Never thought I'd have to wage war against these cheeky songsters.

I've had the cheap netting from pound-shops and it's ok for a season - then it goes brittle. You get what you pay for as with most things.

Two sheds, I've bought some debris netting on your advice, 3x50m, it's great stuff. Mine has two black seams running along its length, I'm worried that butterflies will be able to squeeze through this so I'm going to seal them up. Does yours have seams and if so any easy solutions?

Stu - yeah, same stuff. The holes are not really a bother. A couple of butterflies will always get through, but it keeps 90% of them off.
