It is very much cheaper to buy bags of compost, (as far as i can see), but I am using up mum's neglected grow bags too... when she gives me them that is

You will probably also have more room if not using grow bags because things like salad leaves don't need a deep bag do they?

Although I'm just repeating what others have said, I've only got a small flat with paved outside, but have mini greenhouses (any B&Q type shop, but Robert Dyas has the best imho) , and have everything in pots and growbags ! you can even add to the layout of the garden by using novel ideas for pots (e.g. wicker baskets, straw hats, or waste paper bins!)

      good luck!

The flower buckets that you can get free from Asda and some florists make good containers for toms and cucumbers, plus lots of other things.
