Celery ? i know im a pain keep asking questions

Ive decided to try my hand at celery, it seems to be doing well, i have wrapped newspaper round it and dont let it dry out, is their anything else i can do ? or need to do ? my father in law says celery is impossible to grow and has bet me £10 it wont. ive looked under the paper and it does seem to be growing.

I have about 300 odd planted in a block and the only attention they are going to get is to keep them well watered. They are one of the self blanching varieties, so nearer harvest time I will place a wall of straw round the outside rows to help blanch them.
It's not impossible to grow - just difficult !!

I think he is just been moody, he started growing veg a couple of years ago like i did, (he`s very competitive) goes mad planting stuff and doesnt really look after it, then sulks when my stuff grows ! in laws !!!! who would have them !!!!!

And watch out for slugs getting up inside the paper and doing hidden damage...................

I dont know why if its where i live now, i dont seem to have to much of a problem with slugs ! ( touch wood ) at my old house they were a nightmare and ate everything no matter what i did.

Celery likes moisture..........so do slugs!

I think snadger, with my veg garden now i built i small raised frame then built raised beds and barked the walkways, was costly to do !!! but i havent had the slugs attack ( yet !) i ve noticed snails stuck to my can recycling bin ! but thats it

Vertical surfaces ain't nothing to a slug or snail! I often see one inch diameter snails on my greenhouse windows, sometimes even hanging on the roof!
I dare say you aren't plagued with slugs but those moist newspaper collars you have around your celery may attract them? Hopefully not and you'll get lovely clean blanched stems (With no nibbles in them)

PS I also have raised beds and barked walkways, but the slugs live under the membrane under the bark chippings........

New Horizon Slug Stopper Granules seem to be very good at keeping slugs at bay, they are certainly doing the job at my allotment. so scatter some of those around your plants and that should be them protected. (No, I have no financial interests in this company - although I might buy shares someday !)
I've noticed that slugs are not nearly as keen on areas with lots of dry wood, as they are on stoney areas. Snails too.
