little gem has no heart

I'm very new to this. I've sowed some little gem seeds in some containers and approx 2 months on the plants are about the right size but have no substance just a few outer leaves, no heart. What have I done wrong !! Any advice would be much appreciated.

My little gems started like that and we just continued to pick the outer leaves. But as we have lots of other types of lettuce growing we began to eat the other types with curley leaves, red lollo and rocket. Since leaving the little gems they have now hearted nicely. I also put a small bottle cloche over a few and these seemed to get them going.

I always have this problem with Little Gem. I was told the other day that to get good hearts they need to be planted close together. I'll try it with the next batch.

Mine are hearting up nicely ... planted 6" apart on lotty (started off in modules)
