Sowing lettuce seeds, are they safe?

I have just sown some lettuce seeds, please can anyone tell me if they will be safe under this make shift protection from birds? My mum thinks the holes might be too big. Thanks, Hx

I've never lost lettuce to birds, but slugs on the other hand......

Only problem I've had from birds and that's when one dug in around in a container of carrot seeds, it must have been looking for worms.

Oh that's not fair... You need a sign, 'No worms here'... Did the carrots survive?

I was a bit done because I'd spent ages spacing the seeds out so I wouldn't have to thin them too much, never mind least some of them have started to grow. This week I'm doing more seed so I'll be covering those with some netting.

Blackbirds will rummage in open ground for worms, and thereby disturb seeds - but they don't eat any veg.

Sparrows will eat pea & beetroot foliage in early spring (they like spring greens!)

Pigeons will eat brassicas: these need netting from the get-go
