Rate of Return on tomato plants

a bit of a newbie question...

How many tomatoes should I be expecting to get from each plant?

Specifically, trusses seem to have about 6 - 10 little green toms on 'em at this stage. Is that 'it' for the truss? Or will more trusses form on the plant / more toms come from the same truss?

I have four plants, each with four trusses, and on average assume about 8 tomatoes per truss so that gives me...well, a nice amount, but not enough to get me through the summer

328g on average for each tomato plant in my moon/non-moon trial last year.

If you are growing vines, then you can train them up string or long canes and let them keep cropping and growing, or you can lop the growing stem off after 4 trusses and leave those to ripen and put all their efforts into the toms.

It also depends on the type of tomato that you have.

I'd say 4 plants are not enough for a summer of toms, but if you grow some cherry toms they keep producing and producing, with hundreds on each plant.

They are vine tomatoes, of the cherry type (I can't remember the precise type but I have the packet safely stowed so can find out). So could i be in store for 'hundreds of tomatoes'?

Would have liked to grow more than 4 plants, but we're currently limited to growing on a balcony <insert yearning-for-a-garden-type look here>

On a side-note, in hindsight I think i grew the plants too leggy as they are about 5ft tall now with 4 trusses. Would have been better to try and grow them a bit more compact and have more trusses within the same height, iykwim.

by some cherry ones, it usually means the bush ones.....

If you have space for one more pot, could you get a nursery grown one that grows low and bushy for those hundreds of toms? I have quite a few yellow millefleur on the go from here for the same reason....as well as many other types in the greenhouse and the garden and the lottie......etc etc.

zoiks those centiflor toms look very exciting. I didn't even know such a thing existed. See what you mean about hundreds of toms!

what do you grow them in?

I grow mine in big pots in the greenhouse, and some will be in the garden with stakes!

I will enjoy the crop from my vine toms this year (all being well), and the centiflors will be top of my list for next summer.
