  • What can I plant for the rabbits to eat?

might be the wrong place to put this, sorry

My daughter has 3 rabbits and I was wondering what would be safe for them to eat that we could grow? Something that is fast growing would be good

Would hate to give them something that made them ill!

We've got a lot of raddish top going spare at the mo..... are they ok?

Mine used to like a few dandelions!!! But I guess you meant what veg!
Lettuce in moderation, kale, carrots..... mine didn't like radish tops, don't think they are poisonous though.

Lettuce is the obvious. Quick to grow. My lottie neighbour grows kale for his. Takes a while but it overwinters

I assume they have the same diet as guinea pigs?
(except that guineas need more Vit C)

Mine eat the tops and peelings of almost anything. I don't grow anything special for them.
        their favourite foods are:

        - grass
        - carrot tops
        - cleavers
        - sow thistle
        - dandelion (actually that should be at No.1)
        - leaf beet

they also eat carrots, grapes, apples ... anything that is going over and the parrots won't eat it

Lettuce is not good for them.
It is diuretic and has little nutritional value. Kale is much better. http://www.mismatch.co.uk/rabbitfood.htm

I often cheat with my chickens and get the leftover veg tops and leaves from the market that they are going to throw away... it's free

they can have quite a bit then!

I did notice after putting a lettuce in their poo went a bit runny..... I thought between 3 of them it would be ok...

What about parsley? Got quite a bit of that going spare.

ours didn't like perpetual spinach but would munch on it in a pinch, but he loved parsley, carrot tops, bindweed shoots if they were left in the sun for a day [I don't know why, he was a bit strange]

My guineas have gone crazy for the carrot thinnings, it is funny watching them eat because they start at the root end, and munch them until their mouth has a huge bunch of feathery fronds sticking out. After each one they squeal and skip about, it is really cute!
They eat radish tops, but don't love them so much (a bit like me).

I don't grow much specifically for the rabbits but they get a lot of things that would go on the compost heap eg peelings, leaves, or anything that's a bit shabby but not gone off/mouldy/rotten. They can eat most things, other than potato (any parts)and tomato (foliage). In the last two days mine have had celariac, swede, carrot, parsnip, sweet pepper, lettuce, apple, radish leaves, pumpkin & butternut squash. Plus various weeds eg thistles, dandelion, grass, clover. Herbs are fine too.

Their poop goes on the compost heap so it all just ends up a bit more processed, lol.

Lettuce wise, watery iceburg style tends to be one to avoid where as the more leafy stuff is okay in small quantities.

My rabbits are very used to large amount of lots of different veg but you will upset a rabbits gut if you suddenly start feeding the above. Introduce new stuff gradually and build amount the amount slowly too.
