  • Pumpkins or butternut squash?

    Hi everyone,

I'm after some help! I've got some kind of squash plants springing up all over the place after I used homemade compost - we put both pumpkin and butternut squash in the composter (not going to make that mistake again ) so it could be either.

Is there any way of telling which it is (before it grows either a pumpkin or a squash?)

Now I just have to find homes for the 20 additional tomato plants that have grown as well - never putting tomatoes in the compost again either !

Any advice or will I just have to be patient?

    Thanks
    Kate

No way of telling I'm afraid. Until they fruit, that is. And even then they might not be pure-bred if they weren't pollinated by hand.
I'm in the same boat, saved some seeds from various squashes we ate last year and forgot to label them, so I'm playing 'squash roulette'.
    Good luck!

Squash (pumpkins and courgettes are included in this category) are very promiscuous.
You are likely to have some kind of a mongrel ... might be edible, might not be.

IMO it's best to stick to F1 for these, so you know what you're getting!

Thanks to both of you, had a feeling that would be the case. Ah well, it'll be interesting to see what we get then and if it is edible!
