  • Mange tout advice

    Hello all

put some mange tout plugs in on Sunday and just popped up there to water to find that they have all flopped over. Should I have use pea sticks? And if so, should I tie them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    many thanks

I grow Oregon Sugar Pod which grows to 4 - 5 ft and Goldensweet which can top 6 ft - so yes, I'd have put some support in. Do you know which variety you've grown? there might be a low grower but I still always support peas, even dwarf ones.

You need to get peas off the ground, otherwise the slugs will scoff them.

Even dwarf ones (like Feltham first) need some twiggy sticks to cling to.

The garden centre told me that they are a normal variety & not dwarf!

I do have some bamboo canes in the shed which I can use - although I seem to remember that I planted them quite closely together in short rows.....

Let's hope that the slugs haven't eaten them before I can get up there later...........

well then they definitely need some support.
Canes are no good ... you need pea & bean netting or chicken wire.

            Thanks Two Sheds -

I do have some of that green netting - what time of support do you suggest using the netting? From what I can remember, I have 3 rows of 4 plants & they are quite close together... around 10-15cm apart (as per the instructions)

Sorry, but I can't recommend the netting ... it's too floppy and rubbish.

Get some chicken wire, it's not expensive.
Shove a cane in both ends of a length (mine is 12 foot long to fit my bed), and then canes every 3 foot or so. Weave the canes through the holes in the wire.
The canes will hold up the wire, the wire will hold up the peas.

OK, many thanks... I will give this a go! I don't think I will have time tonight to do this so I may just pop up there and use some pea sticks until Sunday, when I will have more time.

Thanks so much for your help and advice
