Bugs on parsnips

I have some blackbugs/beetles munching their way through my parsnip leaves. I've no idea what they are and have never heard of anything like this. Any ideas ?

Hmmmm, I've look in my insect book but it's hard to even hazard a guess with that info. There are so many different bugs.

I've got lots of these bugs in the garden at the moment...

I'm glad I haven't been squishing them as they are the good guys according to my Collins guide. They eat other insects

I have no idea what they might be, but if they're damaging your plants, squish 'em!
