One of my plot sharers - (six of us share a full size allotment) - grew some butternut squash last year from a commercial variety i.e. bought from Sainsburys so I am trying the same thing this year together with some squash which I have bought as seed. My question is, and I don't know if anyone can help. Are the flowerheads like courgettes as my plants seem to have loads of what I think are male flower heads i.e. no swollen stems. Would it encourage the girlies if I took them off? I tend to do this with courgettes to encourage the females to grow more quickly (well initially anyway, no stopping them later on). I've looked at a thread about butternut squash but it didn't mention the flowers.
