cucumber mystery

Has anyone come across a cucumber plant wilting for no apparent reason? I had 4 cucumber plants going great guns up until this weekend. One of them wilted, the whole plant, not just a few leaves.

The odd thing is that it was sharing a growbag and the other plant is fine!

I have fed and watered them all the same and removed male flowers when they have appeared. I have had some pretty nice cucumbers off them too.

I checked for water (to much/to little) all was fine, no obvious signs of disease or pest attack. I decided to remove it as I didn't want whatever caused it to wilt to affect the other one in the same bag.

Any ideas guys, I am at a loss!

Check the roots. I should think that is where the problem is.

There is a disease called verticillium wilt that affects cucmber plants exactly as you describe.

could be wilt as Rana says, or it could be something chewing the roots or lower stem?

Will keep a beady eye on the rest, just in case! Now does anyone have any ideas of getting rid of midge flies in a polytunnel apart from buying a pet lizard!

what do you call midge flies?
do you mean fungus gnats/fruit flies? If so, that could be the reason for your cuke wilt ... the larvae eat roots of plants.
Cause = over-watering

I do believe that could be the problem, after I got rid of the wilted cucumber I did notice tht the bag was rather wet and there where some small flies walking on the surface. I didn't think nothing of it until i read your reply!
