Peppers ripening?

Hi, I have 5 pepper plants not sure what variety they are i planted them from seed from ones i got at the supermarket just to see if they would grow (i planted them in march), they did grow and i have 5 very healthy big pepper plants all with fruit on them, some of the peppers are quite big but are still green, so do they ripen on the plant or am i to take them off to ripen? i prefer red and yellow peppers, or do some varieties not change colour? its my first year growing them so im not totally clued up yet! btw they are inside on a nice warm sunny windowsil.

Ive had a similar thing with mine, they have gone from green and shiny to brown without going red at all :-( Mine are outside so maybe not enough sunshine - it is North Yorkshire after all !

They ripen on the plant, my big peppers are just starting to turn, just wait a bit longer and they'll get there.

You can get chocolate peppers where brown is the final colour! Sometimes red peppers go a sort of dark black/brown colour before going red to.. I guess where the red/green pigment is mixed.

how do you tell when they are ripe (hope thats not a thick question), we have "sweet peppers" (seeds from poundland) growing in the garden & we have quite a few big green peppers on at the mo but im sure that wont be their finaly colour but at the same time dont want to leave them too long & loose them!

I have been eating small dumpy green peppers. They look and feel like shop bought peppers just smaller. Pick one and try.

They'll stop growing and appear to do nothing for awhile and you can eat them green then. They will change if you wait though

I noticed one of my big green ones starting to turn an orange colour in places now so looks as though that one is ripening

Not all varieties change however long you wait but the ones that do seem to do best left on the plant.

I have got a huge green pepper that I'm willing to change colour but its still green and had been for about 6 weeks now!! Also the fruits on one of my pepper plants have grown as a really pale yellow/lime colour. I'm assuming these are under ripe yellow peppers, otherwise I don't know what's wrong with them!

I bought some plug plants form Wilkos this year. One lot said green peppers and one lot red peppers. The red ones have ripened quite quickly. The green ones are as they should be, still green.
When I saved seed from shop bought peppers they did very well and produced lovely red peppers but they were very hot like chillies. Was a bit of a shock 'cos we had them on salad.

I have three good big plants of 'Diablo' oxhorn peppers and they have all produced masses of fruit. Two peppers started to turn red, but they had spots of rot at the same time. This has also happened to many of the green ones and I am wondering if it is something that I am doing wrong. They are in the conservatory, so they get as much heat and light as is going outside, and they are watered well each morning. I'd be grateful for a jog in the right direction from those who know.
