Compost help

I have built my own compost heap, it probably wont be any good but it was using some old wire fencing I found in the garden so totally free, which is always good for me.

The question I have is regarding what can go into a compost heap, well mostly what type of cardboard. Is it just the brown cardboard boxes or can cereal box cardboard go in too... I always have loads of that!

I would just like to say that I am new to the forum and have learnt lots already just from reading past posts, some are very funny

The only thing you have to avoid is perrennial weed seeds, as the heap won't get hot enough to neutralise them. Best to avoid tasty cooked food, unless you want to feed the fourlegged wildlife. Just about anything organic is fair game for a compost heap, it's just that some things take longer to rot down than others. If you use a lot of cardboard (any sort will do), soak it well first and rip it into smallish pieces. Lots of fresh green stuff warms it up quickly and don't forget to add layers of soil or used compost, that helps activation, as do nettles (they're usefull in the garden).

If the compost heap is just made with wire netting you may want to line it with large pieces of cardboard - helps to retain heat & moisture

I agree with above, most things things can go on but I wouldn't put a big layer of one thing, try to mix all the 'ingredients'

Hi I was told not to put in shiny paper/cardboard like cereal boxes but cannot remember the reason why!
