What are the rules on fences?

That is, are the fences surrounding my garden mine to drill holes in as I please? The support bits are facing in to our garden.

I want to drill some holes in, put up some fixings and attached long wooden poles along the fence above my blackberries. Am planning on "stringing" cut up milk bottles on the wooden poles, planting them up with strawberries and having the hanging gardens of strawberrylon.

I thought someone on here might know if this is ok to do? Or even tried it themselves?

If the supports are on your side then it indicates to me that it is their fence to maintain. So just check with them to say you are only drilling holes and not doing something that could incur a cost to them in repairing their fence.

As long as you don't damage the fence, then I can't see a problem.

hi i have to agree the fence will belong to next door you will need their permision to
"damage it" which could be how they see it ,can you not make a free standing frame .

On our deeds, the bad side (post side) is mine, and those that have a good side in my garden arent mine to maintain.

Never even considered it when I've put trellis and supports up, just done it! Maybe I should have thought about it but it's never been a problem.

I'll be honest, i've just payed out quite a bit of money out on a fence to make my garden more private...and if my neighbours drilled holes in it for what ever reason's...i wouldn't be impressed....sorry.

The rules usually are, as you look at your house the fences to the left are yours, if they fall down or rot you replace.

were we are it's the right side we responsible,it should give some indication in the deeds,also ask the other neigbours if they can throw any light on things

Hmm, well I did look it up online and it said check the deeds first (boo), but otherwise, the supports are usually on the side of whoever owns/put up the fences. The fence I'm thinking of divides us from two separate properties.

Time to dig out the paperwork I suppose..otherwise, probably back to the drawing board. Hurrumph.

Looking from our house, we are responsible for the fence to the left and the rear of our garden. We replaced the left hand fence 8 years ago with 6ft solid panels to divide our patios and nice picket fence up the rest of it. Our neighbour promptly screwed trellis to her side (without asking) and is growing a montana clematis up it which is so rampant it is now heading for our pergola and threatening to swap our Trachelospermum Jasminoides!! Man I can't wait to move!!

Oh dear, how annoying! See, this is why I wanted to check before I did anything like that. It won't be that invasive really, just 4 screws, but I think it's only fair to check.

Yes, the other person wasn't playing fair with you there. The owner is supposed to get the unattractive side and the adjoining neighbour gets the nice side.

Round us the owner gets the decent side so think it can vary from area to area.
