  • manure-leave it or dig it in?

    Hello,
I have just covered a 3rd of my plot with a good covering of manure ready for the coming season for my veg. and would like to know if i should leave it lying on top of the soil for now and how long i should let it lie there before i dig it in ready for sowing or could it be dug into the earth now (or rather when the soil has dried out a little, after all the rain!!!) and then left dug into the soil till i'm ready to sow my veg.
    Many thanks..
    Neil

I'd leave it Nelvis but don't amnure all your plot as some crops don't like freshly mucked ground (carrots etc)

On sandy Loam or Sand lay on top and let the wums do the work on Clay I would dig it in to space out the pores better.

I generally only manure the area that my potatoes are going in and that seems to work fine if you are doing crop rotation.

I'd add beans (climbing and dwarf), squash, cucumbers, courgettes and marrows to Jennie's spuds for recently manured beds. In the growing season I pull aside the straw mulch between rows of e.g. growing tomatoes, beans, Jerusalem Artichokes, rubub and globe artichokes, sprinkle on manure fresh or well-rotted (not touching stems of growing plants), then put the mulch back on top.
