I have a cold at the moment and am obsessed with filling my (almost empty) compost bin with whatever comes to hand.

This happens to be snotty tissues, which I assume would break down OK...anyone have any intelligent comments (or otherwise)..

No reason why you can't throw your tissues in there - as long as you don't mind eating them

not sure how long the cold virus can live outside the body but presuming it takes a year for your compost shouldnt be a problem

My sympathies are with you BVP - I'm now into my second cold (another bsolute snorter) in three weeks! Feeling very sorry for myself but managed to go through a seed catalogue yesterday. Hadn't thought of putting the tissues on the compost. Been burning mine! But then the ash goes onto the ground - so not all lost!

Did you know that once you have had one type of cold you will be immune to that same one if it ever crosses your path! So even if the virus was in your compost you wouldn't be able to catch it. However i'm sure the virus will break down by the time you use it on your plot.

Hadn't thought of composting tissues. Will do so from now on, but the worms better eat quick. Last few weeks we've been getting through boxes and boxes of the things!

I suppose this time of year a lot of people can sympathise...maby I shall go around with a big box offering to everyones snotty tissues off them!

Have been threatening my OH (who is newly pregnant BTW!) that I will keep a large barrel by the side of the loo to pee in...am I getting a bit obsessed with this 'recycling' lark.

Apparently man pee is better in the compost heap that woman pee, something to do with hormone's. Also of course men are better designed for the task.

Ive been putting the kitchen towel that we use in the compost for a couple of months now. Not trying to sound like i understand, but as long as it is balanced and not one big paper bank it should be ok.

I'm glad the answer turned out to be 'YES' because I've been putting my snotty tissues and kitchen roll in the compost heap all winter, there would be HE.L to pay if the answer was 'NO' and I had to go on a search and rescue mission. Not a job I'd fancy doing. Thanks for the reassurance.

It’s the oestrogen in the wee that is the problem. If you have a female dog then don't bother with a lawn. It will soon be dotted with dead patches and you can never get them to grow back.

I remember a plot neighbour telling his 8 year old to go pee on the compost, next thing junior was on the shed roof. He said he could aim better from up there.

I put all tissues, kitchen roll, shredded bills and plain cardboard in my bin. I balance this with layers of garden and kitchen waste. Have also been using my sons pee. The compost was fantastic. So all these items do work. Nice to see so many pasionate composters out there. Anything like pure wool jumpers, cotton fabric or sheeps wool can be added.
